Crown reduction vs tree felling
Pruning and removal solve different problems. A survey helps decide whether the tree can be retained safely.

The main differences
Crown reduction reduces height or spread; thinning reduces density; lifting clears lower branches; deadwood removal removes dead material; felling removes the tree.
When pruning may solve it
- More light or clearance is needed
- The tree is healthy but too large in places
- Deadwood or end-weight is the main concern
- Neighbour or access issues can be addressed proportionately
When removal may be safer
- Severe structural defects
- Advanced disease or decline
- Unmanageable conflict with buildings/access
- Storm damage beyond practical remediation
Ask for a survey
Tree health, permissions, access and long-term value should be considered before deciding.
Survey request
Tell us about the tree and we’ll suggest the next step
Share the location, what you are worried about and whether you have photos. We will usually start by deciding whether photo advice is enough or whether a site survey is needed before quoting.
